What to Pack for a Cruise: What I Wish I Knew Earlier
Cruises are one of my favorite ways to travel. Unpack once, visit multiple destinations, and let someone else handle the logistics. Sounds perfect, right? It is… once you know what to pack.
After many cruises, there are a few things I wish someone had told me before I zipped my suitcase for the first time. So if you are preparing for your first cruise, or your fifth, here is a practical, lighthearted packing guide based on real-life “ohhh, that would have been helpful” moments.
1. Your Carry-On Matters More Than You Think
Your checked luggage may not arrive at your stateroom for several hours after boarding. Sometimes longer.
Pack a carry-on with:
Your swimsuit and cover-up
Sunscreen
Medications
Travel documents and passport
A change of clothes
That way you can head straight to lunch or the pool and start vacation mode immediately instead of refreshing the hallway waiting for your bags.
2. Magnetic Hooks Are a Cruise Cabin Secret
Cruise cabin walls are metal. Magnetic hooks are a game changer.
Use them to hang:
Hats
Lanyards
Lightweight bags
Swimwear
Cabins are cozy, and anything that helps keep things organized is worth packing.
3. Bring More Than One Swimsuit
You will thank yourself for this one.
Swimsuits take forever to dry in cruise cabins. Having at least two means you are never putting on a damp suit, which is never fun.
4. A Small First Aid Kit Goes a Long Way
Yes, ships have medical centers, but they are not free.
Pack basics like:
Pain relievers
Motion sickness remedies
Band-aids
Blister pads
Aloe
Any daily medications
It saves money and keeps minor issues from becoming vacation interruptions.
5. Dress Codes Are Real, But Not Stressful
Cruise lines have themed nights like formal night or white night. You do not need to overdo it, but it helps to be prepared.
Bring:
One dressy outfit
Comfortable but polished evening wear
Comfortable shoes for walking
The goal is to feel confident and comfortable, not stressed about outfits.
6. Don’t Forget the Unexpected Essentials
Some small items make a big difference:
Reef-safe sunscreen
A refillable water bottle
A light sweater for cool dining rooms
A small backpack or tote for port days
A lanyard or card holder for your cruise card
7. Leave Room in Your Suitcase
You will bring things home. Souvenirs, gifts, maybe a new favorite outfit from a port stop.
Either pack a foldable duffel bag or leave some extra space so you are not sitting on your suitcase trying to zip it closed on the last night.
